Venue History

The Mount Smart Stadium has a long and impressive history which now has turned into a legacy.

Located in Penrose, Auckland, New Zealand, the initial idea for this venue came about all the way back in the mid 1940’s and first started it’s plan to create a sports stadium in 1953.

This amazing idea was successfully approved and the plan went ahead and in 1967, the Mount Smart Stadium was ready to open it’s doors.

During the 1980s, the Mount Smart Stadium became most famous for hosting Rugby matches and tournaments and quickly became the number one place to see teams go head to head. This legacy has continued throughout the decades and is still one of the main features at the Mount Smart Stadium today.

The venue now captures a roaring atmosphere, so it’s no wonder why fans travel from all over the country and the rest of the world to make a visit to the Mount Smart Stadium.

The venue’s capacity has also gained an important reputation and it now stands in the top 4 biggest stadiums in the whole of New Zealand.

Mount Smart Stadium’s large capacity enables the venue to host a number of different type of events. As well as featuring sports events, Mount Smart Stadium is known as the best place to witness live music concerts.

For this reason, some of the greatest and most legendary solo acts and bands have performed right on it’s very stage.

One of the biggest music highlights to have taken place at the Mount Smart Stadium among others, is Adele’s sensational tour in 2017.

Adele took to the Mount Smart Stadium stage and blew the crowd away with an unforgettable set and also gained the record for the biggest crowd at any event at the Mount Smart Stadium with an impressive 45,000.
